The afro has long been associated as a symbol of black pride in black communities across the world and to some is viewed as a counteraction to the misrepresentation of black hair, one of the lasting effects of slavery and colonialism.

With black communities in Africa and the diaspora connecting through social media expressing shared experiences and the push for decolonisation of one's self specifically Eurocentric standards of beauty, the afro is among one of many traditionally black hairstyles which is going to be appearing on album covers for generations to come.
